A symbol of freedom and exploration, this sailboat watch features a dial composed of brown mother of pearl for the sky, white mother of pearl for the sails, blue tinted abalone for the water, maple, alder, or walnut wood for the hull of the boat and black-lip abalone for the keel. With the boat heeling to port, you can almost feel the wind and ocean swells. Dial is set behind sapphire glass to resist scratches and encased in a hypoallergenic stainless steel case. The hour and minute hands are luminous (glow in the dark) with a blue seconds indicator.
Backstory: For a few years in my mid 20's, I lived on a sailboat in the San Francisco Bay. It was a magical time, full of adventure and challenge. We were young, strong, and loved to push our limits. The San Francisco Bay was an intense training ground and also a way to have a mountain of fun every weekend. We sailed every every chance we got, playing in the white caps of the bay. Like every live-aboard, we soon wanted to take a few years off and cruise the South Pacific. Make the loop from SF to Costa Rice, over to Australia, up to Micronesia, Japan, over to Hawaii and back home. We equipped our boat, paid off our bills and began to get open-ocean experience by bringing the racing yachts back to the bay from Mexico. After two successful trips, we were hired to bring a beautiful Swedish built Swan 44 up the coast. But things didn't go as planned. It was a harrowing trip that changed the trajectory of my life. Obviously, Mother Nature had other plans for me. In San Diego I got off that boat, promptly sold my boat and enrolled in engineering school.
Even though my South Pacific trip didn't work out (and I'm ok with that), I still have a love for sailboats and feeling the wind to adjust my course. So, when a family member asked me to create a sailboat watch for her son, my eyes got wide and I jumped at the chance.
* The shell used is harvested and managed under strict fishing quotas. Only the waste shell is used. The shades, patterns, and color variations are inherent natural characteristics. No two watches are ever identical.
Case: 38mm polished stainless steel, scratch resistant sapphire glass, water resistant to 30 meters.
Movement: The heart of the watch - is a Swiss made Ronda movement (cell 364). Standard battery life is 40 months. Power saving mechanism with pulled-out stem: Reduction of consumption by approximately 70%.
Bands: All bands are hand-sewn vegetable-tanned goat leather that will feel soft and luxurious next to your skin.
Vegetable-tanned leather, made with natural tannins, looks and feels more natural and has a beautiful texture of color. Over time, the band will improve. If you've ever seen a leather jacket or bag that looks beautifully aged, it's probably vegetable-tanned leather. Vegetable-tanned leather develops a patina over time, giving the leather a soft sheen and beautiful depth of color. The patina develops in response to usage and exposure to sunlight and heat, making each item truly unique to the owner. Vegetable-tanned leather also often smells sweet and earthy, rather than the chemical, synthetic smell of chrome-tanned leather.
- It is extraordinarily scratch-resistant. Sapphire has a value of 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. This makes it the 3rd hardest natural substance next to moissanite (synthetic diamonds) and diamonds.
- Clearer than glass.
- Less reflections than glass.
- Its fracture toughness is around 4 times greater than that of Gorilla Glass.
