A Pelican Love Affair

My love of pelicans started almost 30 years ago on a beach in California when I happened upon a feeding frenzy. I saw hundreds of pelicans diving rapidly to take advantage of a school of fish caught in a small bay. I watched one pelican consume 14 fish in less than five minutes before I lost sight of it. I thought that surely the bird would burst. Where was it holding all these fish? My wonder and curiosity reignited on a trip to Baja Mexico three years ago. Pelicans were everywhere. I knew I needed to make a watch about these large, magnificent and prehistoric looking birds.

Materials Used - This dial is 14 pieces of shell carefully inlaid in the ocean green abalone background.

• Background: Abalone tinted ocean green
• Rock: Pink Heart abalone
• Beak, wings, chest, and head: Tinted abalone shell
• Neck: Mother of pearl
• Reeds and feet: Anodized aluminum

• 35mm Case: Polished 316L hypoallergenic stainless steel.
• Movement: Swiss made Ronda movement (cell 364). The battery life is approximately 18 months from the time of assembly or last service.
• Sapphire Glass: It is extraordinarily scratch-resistant. Sapphire has a value of 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. This makes it the 3rd hardest natural substance next to moissanite (synthetic diamonds) and diamonds. Its fracture toughness is around 4 times greater than that of Gorilla Glass.
• Hands: Luminous. Three hands - standard hours, minutes and seconds indication.
• Water Resistance: Up to 30 meters (~100 ft).
