A symbol of great intelligence and many talents, this octopus watch was created with 22 pieces of blue and blonde tinted abalone.
As always, this watch keeps perfect time with a Swiss quartz movement and has a sapphire crystal installed instead of glass so that it will never scratch, crack or cloud.
* The shell used is harvested and managed under strict fishing quotas. Only the waste shell is used. The shades, patterns, and color variations are inherent natural characteristics. No two watches are ever identical.
Backstory: I spent 6 months living on Whidbey Island in 2011. Leaving the island usually required a 20 minute ferry ride across the Puget Sound and into Seattle. These rides were very relaxing as I looked for whales and other sea creatures each time. Around this same time, I picked up the book, Octopus: The Ocean's Intelligent Invertebrate written by the Seattle Aquarium. The book was so good I became completely enamored and enchanted by the octopus. They said in the book that there were 35 octopuses in the Puget Sound and each one had a name. The authors really loved the octopus and page after page, I began to love it too. I visited the museum, looked closely for octopuses on all future ferry rides, shared octopus facts and stories to anyone who would listen and then visited every other aquarium in a one-day drive to see and learn more. I studied how to have my own octopus aquarium and tried to find more books and people to talk to.
This watch was two years in the making because it had to be just right. I discarded three previous designs because they weren't the octopus captured my heart. I wanted it to be a giant pacific octopus and stunning in its beauty and intelligence.
Shell: Mother of Pearl and
Case: 35mm or 38mm polished stainless steel, scratch resistant sapphire glass, water resistant to 30 meters.
Movement: The heart of the watch - is a Swiss quartz movement (cell 364). Standard battery life is 40 months. Power saving mechanism with pulled-out stem: Reduction of consumption by approximately 70%.
Hands: Three hands - standard hours, minutes and seconds indication.
Bands: All bands are hand-sewn vegetable-tanned goat leather that will feel soft and luxurious next to your skin.
Vegetable-tanned leather, made with natural tannins, looks and feels more natural and has a beautiful texture of color. Over time, the band will improve. If you've ever seen a leather jacket or bag that looks beautifully aged, it's probably vegetable-tanned leather. Vegetable-tanned leather develops a patina over time, giving the leather a soft sheen and beautiful depth of color. The patina develops in response to usage and exposure to sunlight and heat, making each item truly unique to the owner. Vegetable-tanned leather also often smells sweet and earthy, rather than the chemical, synthetic smell of chrome-tanned leather.
- It is extraordinarily scratch-resistant. Sapphire has a value of 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. This makes it the 3rd hardest natural substance next to moissanite (synthetic diamonds) and diamonds.
- Clearer than glass.
- Less reflections than glass.
- Its fracture toughness is around 4 times greater than that of Gorilla Glass.
